On the up Down Under: we talk to Rodney Harrex, chief executive of the SATC

Travel Daily caught up with Rodney Harrex, chief executive of the South Australian Tourism Commission, to learn the latest about what’s new Down Under for 2018 and how the commission engages the travel trade. Here’s what he said:
The mission and vision of the SATC Tourism is an economic priority for South Australia and something I have been proud to be a part of for the past five years. I lead a dynamic and creative team who have been responsible for some ground-breaking work to ensure strong prospects for long-term growth for the tourism industry in South Australia.
We’ve shared some major wins over this period – from growing our visitor economy to a record AUD 6.6 billion (USD 5bn), to the introduction of new direct international flights including China Southern Airlines Qatar, Fiji Airways and Emirates, to implementing incredible marketing campaigns in our key markets and securing and hosting world class events.
Rodney Harrex, chief executive at the South Australian Tourism Commission Over the next three years, we will continue to market our tourism products and experiences domestically and internationally, we will develop our strengths of festivals and events, nature, and great living. We will continue to attract investment in tourism and develop our tourism assets and experiences and support our passionate tourism operators.
We are committed to growing our visitor economy to AUD8 billion and creating an additional 10,000 jobs by 2020 and to making South Australia a destination of choice for domestic and international visitors.
New for the SATC for 2018 There are many new and exciting things happening at SATC in 2018 as we continue to build on our fantastic achievements.
Adelaide Fringe Festival We have started the year strong, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors to a range of world class events including the Adelaide Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide and the Adelaide 500. Being a part of the 20-year celebration of the TDU was a magnificent milestone as was witnessing world cycling champions such as Peter Sagan take to our streets.
Just last week we hosted Australia’s largest travel and tourism business-to-business event, ATE18, as well as Tasting Australia, one of Australia’s most anticipated culinary festivals. As winter fast approaches there are a number of regional events to look forward to including Winter Reds, Umbrella Winter City Sounds and in Adelaide the highly anticipated Sydney Roosters versus Melbourne Storm at Adelaide Oval.
Adelaide Oval Looking forward, there are currently 16 new hotel builds announced for the Adelaide region with investment valued at over AUD 2 billion.
Working with travel agents We work closely with our tourism industry to deliver marketing, events and development programs that support tourism growth. SATC works with key Singapore and Malaysian travel agents to develop cooperative marketing campaigns for the purpose of promoting Adelaide and wider South Australia to their customers via print, digital and social media.
Kangaroo Island SATC also attends Tourism Australia’s premier Trade Events including Walkabout (held last September 2017) and Corrobboree Asia (to be held this August 2018) which connects key buyers for the SE Asian region with Australian sellers. We participate in these trade events, together with South Australian tourism product and experiences to enhance the South Australian message and communicate what SA has to offer.
SATC is actively engaged in a Travel Agent training program across Singapore and Malaysia to ensure local agents are up to date with the newest and best tourism products and experiences, such as the Kangaroo Island product and tours and the Barossa wine region experiences.
Barossa Valley We also work with Tourism Australia to further develop the ‘Aussie Specialist’ program which enhances the knowledge of Travel Agents that sell Australia. We have developed a new trade website for trade partners, retail travel agents or wholesale reservation consultants that has lots of useful information about selling South Australia such as suggested itineraries, destination information, events and packages and product updates. Record-breaking results South Australia is welcoming more visitors than ever before, with the latest national and international visitor survey results showing that our state’s visitor economy has skyrocketed to a record-breaking $6.6 billion, with international visitors contributing AUD 1.1bn in visitor expenditure.
These results are a fantastic achievement and can be attributed to a concentrated effort in a few critical action areas – the growth in aviation access, product improvements and upgrades, targeted marketing campaigns, our growing digital marketing presence, our successful bidding for major events and conferences that drive visitation and most importantly tourism operators committed to delivering excellent service and experiences.
More South Australians are also exploring their state and becoming well informed ambassadors for the amazing tourism offerings and experiences and sharing these with interstate and international visitors.

MSC Cruises introduces its next flagship, MSC Grandiosa

MSC Grandiosa MSC Cruises has unveiled the next flagship of its fleet, to be christened in Hamburg on 2 November 2019: the MSC Grandiosa.
The Swiss-based cruise line announced that its next flagship, MSC Grandiosa will be ready to set sail by the end of . that year. MSC Cruises executive chairman, Pierfrancesco Vago commented: “We are delighted to announce the christening of MSC Grandiosa here in Hamburg.
“Since our last christening in Germany of MSC Magnifica in 2010, as a company, we have embarked on a journey of strong growth and the German cruise guest has embraced our brand and our offering in a strong way so it is only natural that we would look to christen in Germany our next flagship and the first of the Meraviglia-Plus ships to come into service, MSC Grandiosa.”
The ship will bring two brand new shows from Cirque du Soleil at Sea, which is part of a long-term partnership between MSC Cruises and Cirque du Soleil. It will result in a total of eight original shows that will be available on MSC Cruises’ four Meraviglia and Meraviglia-plus generation ships.
Cirque du Soleil at Sea MSC Grandiosa will showcase a large promenade and it will serve as the social hub of the ship with an array of shops, specialty restaurants, as well as a new bar and lounge. It will house the L’Atelier Bistrot which will offer lounge seating with a stage and a dance floor, impressionist art, and terrace seating with Parisian Bistrot tables and chairs.
In addition, the promenade will host surprise performances including flash mobs and themed parties, as well as awe-inspiring projections on the 98.5-metre, LED Sky screen.
MSC Meraviglia This summer, MSC Cruises is opening up Northern Europe to even more cruise guests with the addition of MSC Meraviglia. The cruise line will offer four new ships, 36 different itineraries and six possible embarkation ports across Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Denmark.
Vago concluded: “We hold a special relationship with Germany overall and we are looking forward to celebrating with our German partners next November as well as welcoming our international guests to this historic port, rich in Maritime tradition and heritage.”

Jet2.com announces Murcia flights redirected to Corvera Airport

Jet2.com has announced flights to the closing San Javier Airport will cease as of November 2018, with routes to the Murcia region in Spain now heading to Corvera Airport, from March 2019. Flights to Murcia will continue to operate out of Leeds Bradford and Manchester ensuring as little disruption as possible to customers picking up transfers and package-holidays from the two regional hubs.

Steve Heapy (below), CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “We are very impressed with the facilities at Corvera Airport, and we have been working hard to ensure that customers receive the same friendly welcome and VIP customer experience that Jet2.com and Jet2holidays is famous for. In the meantime our Summer 18 operation to San Javier will continue as normal.”
Flights from Leeds Bradford will start operating to Corvera from 29 March 2019, with three weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) operating until 25 October 2019. Flights from Manchester will begin flying to Corvera on 1 April 2019 with three weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) also operating until 25 October 2019. The change means that the airline is able to promote the sale of more than 55,000 seats to and from Corvera Airport.

The announcement ensures a continuity of flights and holidays to the region for customers of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, and comes as a result of the company working closely with both airports as well as the Murcia regional government.
Manuel Fernando-Delgado, managing director of tourism – Murcia Region, said: “We are very excited about Jet2.com and about Jet2.com and Jet2holidays choosing to operate at our new airport in Summer 19. It is truly rewarding to see a prestigious company such as Jet2.com and Jet2holidays being impressed with our airport facilities, which shall drive tourism growth and enhance connectivity in Costa Cálida.”

Marriott Rewards and SPG revamp loyalty programmes

JW Marriott Marquis Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) are aiming to help their members get the most out of travel through their latest loyalty points promotions.
Marriott International has introduced Marriott Rewards MegaBonus and SPG, More Nights, More Starpoints promotions – where members can earn bonus points for each night they stay, starting with their third night.
These new offers allow members to accrue points within each program’s extensive portfolio of hotels, totalling nearly 6,500 hotels and resorts worldwide. Points can be redeemed for free nights, flights, exclusive experiences on Marriott Rewards Moments and SPG Moments, with Marriott Rewards MORE shopping portal, and more.
Registration for both promos run until 30 June 2018, while the earning period is from 16 April to 20 July 2018.
Marriott Rewards MegaBonus By registering for the promo, members will earn 750 bonus points on every night of every stay starting on the third night. The MegaBonus will let guests earn up to 36,000 bonus points.
Nearly all Marriott Rewards brands are participating in the promotion except for Marriott ExecuStay, Marriott Executive Apartments and Marriott Vacation Club owner-occupied weeks.
SPG More Nights, More Starpoints Also starting on guests’ third night, members will earn 250 bonus Starpoints which is the equivalent of 750 Marriott Rewards points for every night spent at participating SPG hotels and resorts. They can earn up to 12,000 Starpoints, which equals to 36,000 Marriott Rewards points.
These promotions are in addition to the everyday member benefits of both programs including free Wi-Fi, mobile check-in/check-out, and, where available, mobile requests and keyless entry.

First four TIPTO agent ambassadors appointed to inform organisation’s strategic direction

On the road with TIPTO After a rigorous and thorough selection process, TIPTO (Truly Independent Professional Travel Organisation) announced its first four agent Ambassadors last week.
The successful candidates were unveiled as Beryl Towne of Althams, Sara Allen of Dartmouth Travel, Stef Trevett of Baileys Travel and Su Dillon of Travel Counsellors.
“Our number one aim for TIPTO is to help our agents’ better sell and earn”
The programme has been established to ‘help inform TIPTO’s strategic direction’ by using the new agent ambassadors’ experience and wisdom to provide insight at all levels of the organisations structure, from the set up and delivery of roadshow events and training sessions, through to the incentive offers from members – as well as maintaining and enhancing TIPTO’s profile.
TIPTO chairman Jane Atkins said: “Our number one aim is to help our agents’ better sell and earn; and what better way to understand the challenges facing today’s front line than from the mouths of agents themselves. The input from these Ambassadors will be invaluable in terms of honing what we do and the leadership team is extremely excited to get all four of them involved ASAP.”
On top of working closely with the organisation, the four will also act as organisation representatives and will be given first refusal on VIP events such as Ladies’ Day at the Races, high-tea at the Ham Yard Hotel and lunch at London’s famed celebrity hangout The Ivy.

ALONGSIDE being creatures of habit, humans also love getting free stuff.
This bodes well for airlines and hotels trying to retain customers through loyalty programs.
Loyalty programs tap into the “science of free” that humans are inclined towards and seek to reward customers for continually using the same brand.

These Asian airports are becoming destinations in their own right Some loyalty programs really are a cut above the rest. So much so, there is an Oscars-esque award ceremony recognizing the world’s best loyalty programs in the travel industry.
The Freddie Awards have been running since 1988 and is recognized as the world’s most prestigious member-generated awards within the travel-loyalty sector.
The ceremony was created for frequent travelers to have their opinions heard and this year, 4.4 million people cast votes for their favorite airline, hotel, and credit card loyalty schemes across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia/Oceania.
Airlines: Virgin Australia’s Velocity program dominated the airline category in the Middle East and Asia/Oceania category.
Taking home the award in categories including “Program of the Year,” “Best Elite Program,” “Best Customer Service” and “Best Redemption Ability.”

Virgin Australia only missed out on “Best Promotion” to Emirates Skywards and Saudia Alfursan which won the prestigious “210 AWARD” given to programs trending among travelers.
Hotels: The Freddie Awards named IHG Rewards Club “Program of the Year” and “Best Promotion” in the hotel category for the Middle East and Asia/Oceania region.
Accor Hotel’s Le Club Accorhotels program grabbed the awards for “Best Customer Service” and “Best Redemption Ability” while Starwood Preferred Guest took the gong for “Best Elite Program” and Taj Innercircle won the “210 AWARD”.
What can these programs offer frequent travelers? Virgin Australia’s Velocity program, for example, has grown its members to seven million users in just 12 years.
Customers can earn points flying with any of its partner airlines including Delta, Etihad, Air New Zealand and Hainan Airline.
Buying gas from BP, staying in selected hotels, subscribing to wine deliveries from Liathwaite’s and Virgin Wines, and many other ways can earn frequent flyers points.
When it comes to redeeming these points, members of the program needn’t worry about having 100 percent of the points as Virgin Australia’s Velocity program offer “Points and Pay” for more flexibility.
As for the Starwood Preferred Guest program, winner of the “Best Elite Program”, loyal patrons of the hotel can make their way up the points tier with every luxury stay.

Atlantis Sanya celebrates official launch with gala musical

Atlantis’s first resort in China officially opened yesterday. Owned by Fosun International and managed by Kerzner International, the opening of Atlantis Sanya was marked with a VIP packed grand opening with government officials, business leaders and Chinese celebrities all in attendance.
The centre piece of the event was a five-act theatrical tour-de force which used 43 performers, dramatic musical performances and fireworks to bring the legend of Atlantis life. Directed by INVNT’s Paul Blurton, the production starred Prinnie Stevens in the lead role of Queen Atlantia.
“It was a momentous opening celebration befitting a leisure development of this size and scale,” said Heiko Schreiner, Atlantis Sanya’s managing director. “It was also a taste of the kind of resort we want Atlantis Sanya to be known for – one that both amazes and inspires. BREAKING: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts to be integrated into AccorHotels

Mövenpick Holding today announced that it has agreed, together with its partner Kingdom Holding, to sell Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts to AccorHotels.
Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts was established in 1973 as an extension of the successful Mövenpick restaurant business. Since then, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has expanded its international presence and today manages more than 20,000 rooms in 84 hotels across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. With 42 additional hotels under development and to open by 2021, the group will further expand its footprint across these continents.
Sébastien Bazin, chairman and CEO of AccorHotels, gave a comment on the huge sale: “With the acquisition of Mövenpick, we are consolidating our leadership in the European market and are further accelerating our growth in emerging markets, in particular in the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.”

AccorHotels is to pay CHF560 million (USD566 million) for Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and should be completed in the second half of 2018.

Its European-Swiss heritage is a perfect fit with AccorHotels.” 16,000 hospitality professionals are dedicated to ensuring Mövenpick’s traditional Swiss values are always upheld.
With the integration into AccorHotels, a travel group with more than 4,300 hotels, resorts and residences operating in 100 countries, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will continue its success and accelerate its further growth. Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will have access to the Accor customer loyalty program, benefit from new sales channels and will be able to increase the operational performance of its managed properties.
