CLIA UK: European river cruises “account for almost 90% of bookings”

AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna on the DanubeCLIA UK & Ireland has launched the UK River Cruise review 2017 which reveals another year of record growth in 2017 for the river cruise sector. Passenger numbers rose by 21% and total bed nights were up by 24%, against 2016.
In 2017, the UK river cruise market reached 210,400 passengers, against 174,400 in 2016, demonstrating that the market continues to outperform many other sectors of the travel industry.
Andy Harmer, senior vice-president membership and CLIA UK & Ireland director, said: “European river cruises, which account for almost 90% of bookings, were the driving force behind this exceptional growth, specifically cruises on the Douro, Russian waterways, Rhine and Danube.
“Cruises in central and western Europe, accounted for almost two-thirds (62%) of all river cruise bookings, with the Rhine and Danube leading the way. However, it was eastern and southern European which saw the most growth last year, predominantly on Russian waterways and on the Douro.
“New events and initiatives to engage the travel agent community”
“Looking outside Europe, three rivers accounted for the bulk of passengers in 2017 last year; the Mekong, Nile and Irrawaddy, with the Ganges and Brahmaputra also performing well.
Harmer went on to add: “With continued investment and innovation in this sector, and with new events and initiatives to engage the travel agent community, the growth in river cruising continues to be an important part of the overall cruise industry.”
AmaPrima in Passau, GermanyCLIA UK & Ireland is a member of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) , the global cruise industry trade association with representation in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia.
The launch of the review comes a week after the parent organisation announced its global promotion, #ChooseCruise aimed at agents, consumers and the press. #ChooseCruise replaces the long running ‘Plan a Cruise Month’, and will kick off this month in the UK and then globally during October 2018.

#ChooseCruise: CLIA launches global campaign

CLIA has announced a global campaign, #ChooseCruise, scheduled to run throughout September in the UK and globally throughout October.
As the cruising industry continues to gain popularity, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade association announced #ChooseCruise, a new campaign that’s targeted at agents, consumers and the global media. The new campaign replaces the Plan a Cruise Month campaign, which ran for the past two years.
The new campaign is set to launch in the UK this September and will provide CLIA member agents access to an online toolkit to help them capitalise on the two-month promotion which will include a marketing and PR guide, plus shareable videos and imagery for their social media campaigns.
Special #ChooseCruise promotions from CLIA cruise lines will also be accessible by travel agent members online at cruiseexperts.org.

Starting this week, a digital media toolkit will be sent to CLIA members and agents can join a number of special events being held throughout September and October, including events in Norwich, Manchester, Malaga, and two beach clean-up events in West Wittering and in Formby.

Joel Katz, managing director at CLIA Australasia and Asia, commented: “With #ChooseCruise coming up, we want to assist our member agents by providing them resources to promote and sell cruise holidays to those new to cruising and those returning to holiday at sea.”
CLIA has split the two months into eight weeks which have all been given a dedicated theme which will be the focus for PR, podcast and social media. CLIA will be producing videos and specially commissioned articles on each theme to help showcase how agents can use these experiences to sell more cruise.
In October, the global cruise industry will come together to host the #ChooseCruise campaign to educate travellers worldwide on why to choose and book a cruise vacation.
Registration for CLIA Conference 2019 starts on 12 September 2018.
