AIRBNB bookings for eco-friendly and sustainable options are on a rise as the company has reported that a growing number of customers are looking at how they can reduce the impact that their travels have on the environment.

In fact, in the last year alone, more than 4.5 million guests around the world have checked in at eco-friendly listings on the platform.

“We’re also seeing more and more hosts on Airbnb provide guests with the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and reduce their carbon footprint while away from home with 30 percent growth in eco-friendly listings globally over the past year,” Airbnb wrote in a statement.

Global bookings between April 1, 2018, and April 1, 2019, increased by 50 percent for environmentally-conscious spaces. In Asia-Pacific, a handful of destinations have chalked up the highest percentage of eco-friendly listings. These destinations are considered small-town escapes from the hustle and bustle of their surrounding major cities.

For example, a treehouse in a teakwood forest in Thailand, an eco-bamboo hideout in the mountains of Bali’s Mount Agung, and an eco-luxe recycled shipping container in Australia. The full list of Asia-Pacific destinations with the highest percentage of eco-friendly listings are:

Trat, Thailand: Located in Thailand’s southeastern corner, Trat borders Cambodia along the Cardamom Mountains. With a coast on the Gulf of Thailand, the province encompasses numerous islands with white-sand beaches and coral reefs, many of which lie within Mu Ko Chang National Park.

It is particularly famed for its 4,095m-tall Mount Kinabalu, the country’s highest peak, crowned with distinctive granite spires.

Ramnagar, India: Ramnagar is a small town and municipal board in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India. Located approximately 65 kilometers from Nainital, Ramnagar is the gateway to the Corbett National Park, the oldest national park and a famous tourist destination of India.

South Grafton, Australia: South Grafton is a suburb of Grafton, New South Wales, taking in most of the area of the city south of the Clarence River.

Niseko, Japan: On Japan’s northern Hokkaido island is Niseko, which boasts major ski centers, rolling mountains dotted with numerous onsen (hot spring resorts), white-water rapids at the Shiribetsu River, and several golf courses against a backdrop of snowcapped peaks.

Gangwon, South Korea: Gangwon is a mountainous, forested province in northeast South Korea, known for its host sites of the 2018 Winter Olympics. A popular winter holiday destination for South Koreans, Gangwon offers ski resorts, mountainside temples, hot springs, and hiking trails.

Lugu, Taiwan: Lugu Township is a rural township located in the southwest of Nantou County in Taiwan, where breathtaking tea gardens are aplenty. It is also home of the Dongding Oolong Tea, which was first cultivated on the Dong Ding Mountain in the area.

Airbnb is also working to bring environmentally conscious travel to even more people. For example, Airbnb’s Community Tourism Programme is partnering with My Green Trip, a growing network of eco-friendly travelers dedicated to organizing community clean-ups and sharing sustainable travel habits. This year, Airbnb is committing US$5.6 million to support efforts to make travel more authentic and sustainable.

And in China, Airbnb signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Friends of Nature, a prominent NGO focusing on environmental protection issues. Through the MoU, Airbnb will work with Friends of Nature to promote sustainable tourism in China, host a series of lectures to educate the Airbnb community on sustainable tourism, and conduct workshops for hosts on sustainable hospitality standards and practices.
