Thailand will close its border to travellers from India, with the exception of Thai citizens, from Saturday, the Thai embassy in New Delhi announced on Monday.

The decision follows the huge surge of Covid-19 cases in the subcontinent.

The embassy said it will not issue certificates of entry for non-Thai nationals until further notice. From May 1, only Thai nationals will be able to enter Thailand from India.

“All COEs that have been issued to non-Thai nationals to enter into Thailand from India with the arrival date from 1 May 2021 will be cancelled,” the announcement said.

The statement elaborated on the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Adminstration’s decision announced on Sunday to temporarily ban arrivals of Indians and other foreigners travelling from India to Thailand.

Three Air India flights from New Delhi will be allowed to land next month, on May 1, May 15 and May 22, according to the embassy.

India on Monday set a global record for the rise in daily coronavirus cases for a fifth straight day, while deaths from Covid-19 also jumped by an all-time high over the previous 24 hours.

With 352,991 new cases, India’s total caseload has crossed 17 million. Deaths rose by a record 2,812 to a total of 195,123, according to Indian Health Ministry data.
