HOLD on to your sunhats because a literary enthusiast’s dream job has just opened for applications in a stunning Maldivian resort.

We know it sounds too good to be true, but Phillip Blackwell, previously of Blackwell’s books, is giving one lucky literary fan the opportunity to combine his or her passion for books and love of luxury by working in possibly the world’s most remote bookshop in a luxury resort in the Maldives.

“The pay is derisory but the fringe benefits unparalleled,” Blackwell told The Guardian.

“The role will evolve and it is in part up to you to make the most of this unique opportunity. It’s a dream job for many people. If I was 25 again I would do it,” he added.

But what does the job at the exclusive five-star Soneva Fushi eco resort actually entail?

This opportunity is open to someone who can spare at least three months to help run an on-premises bookstore which supplies reads to resort guests.

The successful applicant will be tasked with helping the guests, which frequently include A-list celebrities and VIPs, pick out books for their vacation, as well as keep the bookstore in neat order.

The employee will also be expected to write an “an entertaining and lively blog that captures the exhausting life of a desert island bookseller” as Blackwell described it.

Blackwell said applicants should have “a passion for books, the ability to engage guests of all ages,” because as part of the placement you will have to entertain children with storytelling sessions and set up creative writing workshops.

“We want someone on the ground who is creative and inspiring and can maybe get more people to share the pleasure of reading, which is what people enjoy doing on holiday,” Blackwell said.

If you’re looking for any cons or catches of this job, you won’t find them.

You won’t need to worry about accommodation either because although you won’t be living in the US$26,000 per night resort, you’ll have a free place to stay nearby.

The bookshop is part of Phillip Blackwell’s new venture, Ultimate Library, which he set up after leaving his family business in 2006.

Blackwell’s journey to establishing remote libraries in luxurious places began on his travels when he realized hotels, resorts, and even cruise ships offered such a poor selection of books for their guests.

If you’ve ever sailed on the Cunard – Queen Victoria or stayed in Amanoi Resort, Vinh Hy Bay, you may already have come across one of the Ultimate Library outlets.

They’re often stylish, chic and embody their surroundings.
