One in two travellers feels optimistic about taking a trip in the next 12 months, according to the Traveller Sentiment & Influences 2020-2021 report by the US-based Expedia Group.

The study was conducted in October among 11,000 travellers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States. The study’s aim was to learn about the impact of Covid-19 on travellers around the world in 2020 and in 2021.

In 2020, two-thirds of travellers had a planned trip cancelled due to Covid-19 and only a third of travellers took a trip during the pandemic. Of those who took a trip, eight out of 10 travelled for rejuvenation, change of scenery, experience different weather, or to visit family or friends.

In the next 12 months, travellers are more likely to take trips between April and September 2021. However, Brazilian, Chinese, and Mexican travellers showed a higher likelihood of travelling between January and March.

At least 57% of respondents said they would feel comfortable travelling if a vaccine was widely available. Also, more than half of travellers are looking for flexibility such as travel insurance and trip protection, full cancellation options, and refunds on transport and accommodations.

Travellers also want reassurances from travel providers and brands that they are following and enforcing pandemic protocols. Some of the leading factors deciding future transport decisions include mask use and enforcement (50%), cost (47%), and easy refunds or cancellation policies (45%).

Furthermore, people will only take trips if they are confident in their ability to change plans and stay safe.
